These companies have already been allowed to conduct 5G tests in urban areas. It is said that MTNL will also get permission for 5G testing, but before that they will have to pay a fee of Rs 5,000. The Department of Telecommunications has asked telecom companies to test 5G applications in urban areas as well as in rural areas. MTNL has started working with C-Dot for 5G trials in Delhi. A government official said they would conduct a 5G test near Najafgad. They will be given trial spectrum after the company collects the fee.
According to a report by Business Standard, sources in the telecom sector said that 5G tests will be conducted at various locations including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Gujarat and Hyderabad. In this regard, the telecom company official said that the telecom operator has been allotted spectrum at various places in the 700 MHz band, 3.3-3-6 GHz band and 24.25-28.5 GHz band.
The telecom ministry had on May 4 approved applications from Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and MTNL. The department has asked them to test 5G without using Chinese companies’ techniques. The Department of Telecommunications had approved the testing of 5G with Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung and C-Dot. In addition, Reliance Jio Infocomm will test using its indigenous technology.
Get 10 times download speed
According to the Ministry of Telecommunications, consumers will get ten times better download speeds and three times the spectrum performance through 5G technology compared to 4G. During the test, 5G will be tested in an Indian setting. These will include tele-medicine, tele-education and drone-based agricultural supervision. This will enable telecom operators to easily test various 5G devices on their network.
5G tests in cities as well as rural India
Currently the trial period will be 6 months. Among them will be a period of 2 months for equipment purchase and installation. According to the Department of Telecommunications, each operator will have to test in rural and semi-urban settings in addition to urban settings, so that citizens across the country can benefit from 5G technology. This service should not be limited to urban areas only. However, another industry source claims that no telecom operator has been allotted spectrum in Punjab, Haryana and Union Territory of Chandigarh.
