WhatsApp had moved the Delhi High Court against the government, saying the clause should be barred from taking effect from May 25. May 25 was the last day of the deadline set by the government for social media platforms to accept their rules.
“The Union government is committed to protecting the right to privacy of its citizens, but it is also the responsibility of the government to ensure law and order in terms of national security,” Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in a statement on Wednesday. WhatsApp may lose its status in the next 15 days if it does not comply with government regulations. Although it is not yet clear whether the platform will be banned in India, there are some countries around the world that have already banned WhatsApp. There are 5 such countries in the world.
China banned WhatsApp in 2017 and the ban has not been lifted. The messaging app was banned because the government wanted to control content here. The report also states that WhatsApp was banned in China to promote WeChat.
North Korea is the second country after China to ban WhatsApp due to its strong encryption policy. Kim Jong Un’s government has banned the app permanently in 2018. Basically North Korea does not have internet. Only foreign and local elite citizens are able to operate a wireless internet connection.
UAE (United Arab Emirates)
UAE WhatsApp does not allow video calls and facetime. There is no problem with WhatsApp’s encryption policy. The ban is aimed at boosting the UAE due to local telecommunications and the country’s revenue.
WhatsApp’s encryption policy has also been banned in this country. The Syrian government has said that the enemy could use end-to-end encryption to plot against their country.
